A QQQ opening range breakout should be treated as a complete, symbol-specific rule set—not as a line on a chart or a promise that the first move will continue.
Start with the regular market session, the timezone used by the dataset, and a fixed opening-range duration. A 5-minute QQQ ORB and a 15-minute QQQ ORB are different strategies because they create different levels, signal times, risk distances, and samples.
Premarket prices may provide context, but they should not be mixed into a regular-session opening range unless the written rule explicitly says so.
Choose how a QQQ break qualifies
A trade above the range high is not automatically the same as a completed candle close above it. Write whether the break requires a touch, close, open-and-close outside, or a later retest of the exact ORB boundary.

Keep invalidation tied to the entry model
A midpoint stop, opposite-edge stop, and candle-close invalidation create different loss distributions. The distance from entry to invalidation should define one unit of underlying price risk before target levels or position size are compared.
Measure QQQ target progression honestly
Report the number of qualified long and short trades behind TP1, TP2, TP3, stretch, and stop percentages. Cumulative target-touch rates answer a different question from realized returns, and underlying-price targets do not reproduce an options contract's P&L.
Compare QQQ with its own history first
Do not assume a rule that worked on SPY, IWM, or an individual stock transfers unchanged to QQQ. Freeze the rules, use the same date window, review long and short results separately, and then test a later period before promoting a configuration.
Use a pre-trade QQQ checklist
Before acting, confirm that the opening range is complete, the selected confirmation and retest conditions are satisfied, the data is current, the invalidation is known, and the setup remains inside its entry-time limit. A qualified historical pattern still cannot guarantee the next outcome.
Verify QQQ and the regular-session date
Confirm the active ORB window
Check break and retest rules
Calculate the risk distance
Record no-trade and double-break outcomes
Educational use and risk
Historical patterns and target hit rates do not guarantee future results. This guide is general education, not personalized investment advice. Confirm market data with your broker and define risk before entering a trade.
